In 2023, the author underwent major surgery—a lobectomy and open thoracotomy—to treat pulmonary sequestration, a congenital malformation whose name is more poetic than the condition itself. The operation resulted in the removal of most of her left lung. Moving between intimate memoir and lyrical reflection, the book attempts to make sense of pain while asking essential questions: How do you learn to breathe when you become conscious of every breath? How do you live with pain and a scar that feels like a knife lodged in your back? How do you rebuild a broken body?
