Francisco Cienfuegos, a young mestizo rebelling against his criollo father’s world, sees his destiny change when he joins the insurgent forces. Over the years, through his intelligence and ambition, Francisco forges alliances with key figures in Mexico’s history—among them Santa Anna—rising to the rank of brigadier general. Yet as his influence grows, so too do his internal and family conflicts.

The rise of Benito Juárez, followed by the arrival of Maximilian of Habsburg, unleashes a series of dilemmas for Francisco, whose support for the Second Empire drives a wedge through his family. Amid political intrigue, the Cienfuegos patriarch is forced to make difficult choices. With his legacy at stake and confronted by his own children, Francisco must decide how far he is willing to go to preserve everything he has fought for.
