Ona Budrevičiūtė leaves Lithuania dreaming of America, but disembarks in Montevideo, Uruguay.
With no language, no directions, and no safety net, she struggles to turn a life of temporary rooms and precarious jobs into something she can call her own, all the while holding onto the loose threads that tie her to Lithuania and to a sister waiting in Chicago. Between translated names, hunger, paperwork and the constant risk of exploitation, Ona learns to survive through a fragile immigrant network and the stubborn discipline of hope. Crossing becomes a choice, not a transit: Ona commits to a new family and a future that requires accepting responsibility for what was lost, and building a home where none was promised.
